Orange offers the widest network with strong rural reach and broad 5G.
Romania has strong urban 4G and a 5G network now established across Bucharest, Cluj, Timisoara and the main cities, and it is known for unusually fast and cheap mobile data. Orange and Vodafone carry the widest coverage. The realistic weak spots are the Carpathian mountains, the more remote parts of Transylvania and Maramures, and the rural Danube delta. For the cities and the main tourist regions, connectivity is fast and dependable.
Typical local SIM: $8-18. Usually sold at operator stores, supermarkets and the Digi outlets; airport counters at Bucharest Otopeni. A passport is required to register a Romanian SIM. EU carrier terms is included on most prepaid plans, so one Romanian or EU eSIM covers an onward trip through the wider EU under the carrier terms. Local data is among the cheapest and fastest in Europe.
For a short trip a travel eSIM is the simplest call. For a long stay Romania's cheap, fast local packs are hard to beat.
