Magyar Telekom offers the widest and most reliable network with the best rural reach.
Hungary has dependable nationwide 4G and a 5G network now established across Budapest and the larger cities. Magyar Telekom holds the broadest coverage, and the flat Pannonian terrain keeps signal consistent across most of the country, including around Lake Balaton. The realistic weak spots are the more remote stretches of the Great Plain and parts of the northern hills. For Budapest, Balaton and the main tourist regions, connectivity is reliable.
Typical local SIM: $10-20. Usually sold at operator stores, supermarkets and newsstands; airport counters at Budapest. A passport is required to register a Hungarian SIM. EU carrier terms is included on most prepaid plans, so one Hungarian or EU eSIM covers an onward trip through the wider EU under the carrier terms.
For a short trip a travel eSIM is the easiest choice. For a long stay a local pack is cheaper per gigabyte.
